Item 1 ... The extended Census 2000 Demographic Profiles were released in May for Hawaii. In this session we will review what this profile contains, its implications for data users, and relationship to the Summary File 3 data expected in June.

Item 2 ... Census 2000 urbanized areas geographic area definitions were released in May. In this session we will review the scope of these new urban/rural characterizations for Hawaii using GIS tools.

Using Census 2000 with GIS Tools
  -- Hawaii hands-on training sessions

This Web page provides information relating to an earlier program conducted in Honolulu. This Web page is being retained in this form for general reference purposes. Geodemographic resources that were the subject of that program are described in the Hawaii Decision Making Information (HIDMI) Web page and related links.

Data from the Census 2000 short form are already available for more than 8.2 million census blocks covering the U.S. wall-to-wall (Summary File 1 -- SF1). The most detailed Census 2000 race/ethnic data useful for analyzing multicultural issues, Summary File 2 - SF2, have now also been released for all states. Starting this summer and continuing throughout 2002, the Census Bureau will release the "richer" Census 2000 long form data with small area geography down to individual block groups and ZIP code tabulation areas (Summary File 3 - SF3). Parallel to release of the demographic data are the TIGER/Line files -- from which we can derive map files for thematic mapping and geographic reference files for address-matching and geocoding applications.

Attend the Using Census 2000 with GIS Tools sessions to learn more about how to integrate data from these demographic data files with TIGER/Line and other geographic data in a GIS environment.

Under sponsorship of the Hawaii Department of Education, Warren Glimpse of Proximity, will conduct this hands-on training session focused on using Census 2000 with GIS tools. While the content of the sessions will make use of data for Hawaii, the concepts and applications of data and tools apply to any geographic area in the U.S. The Hawaii Department of Education and Proximity, seek to provide learning opportunities in these classes not available elsewhere.

Who should attend. This class is designed specifically for educators and related specialists, researchers, analysts, planners, and others who need a better understanding of how to use mapping and GIS tools with Census 2000 data resources. No previous experience in using Census data or GIS is required.

I already use ArcView. How do I benefit?
This session does provide hands-on instruction and does include training. But this is not just a GIS software training course. Learn about ...
boundary or other cartographic files that your organization might need but might not know about or know how to access.
statistical or other subject matter data that your organization might need but might not know about or how to access.
less expensive, faster, or other improved mapping and visual analysis methods.
The focus is on Census 2000 and related geodemographic data and how to integrate and use these data in a geospatial analytical environment.
Date and Location. The session will be conducted on June 14, 2002. The session starts at 8:30 a.m. and ends at 4:00 p.m.

The session will be conducted at the Kapolei State Office Building, 601 Kamokila Blvd., Room 451. See more detailed location information located below.

The training room is set up with 20 computers; participants may need to share workstations. Each PC is loaded with GIS and related software and web-access enabled.

Registration. Registration is now closed.

4:00 Adjourn

Session Details. The session is organized around a more detailed version of the agenda summarized above. Attendees will use this program Web page, accessed via their computer, throughout the day. The program Web page includes links to references addressed in the session.

The program Web page will remain accessible following the session. Participants will be able to revisit the program Web page, and links to resources, and study or make use of the information from their office following the session.

Instructor. The instructor for the sessions is Warren Glimpse. Founder of Proximity, Glimpse established the State Data Center Program while with the Census Bureau and developed the Columbia, MO GBF/DIME used as prototype for the Census TIGER System. He is developer of the 1990 Census School District Data Book (1990 Census school district special tabulation) under sponsorship of the U.S. Department of Education and continues involvement with Census 2000 counterpart. Glimpse has worked with the Hawaii Department of Education in mapping and educational programs. Glimpse maintains the Census 2000 Data Access and Use Website at http://proximityone.com/cen2000.htm and has developed wide-ranging software and database resources for use in private and public sector applications.
