Census 2000 Data Access and Use
    Summary File 1
-- an information resource developed and maintained by Warren Glimpse

Overview. The Census 2000 Summary File 1 (SF 1) presents counts and basic cross-tabulations of information collected from all people and housing units. This information includes age, sex, race, Hispanic or Latino origin, household relationship, and whether the residence is owned or rented. Data are available down to the block level for many tabulations, but only to the census-tract level for others. Summaries are included for other geographic areas such as ZCTAs and Congressional Districts.

Availability date: June 2001 - September 2001 (complete)

Note: This page is a secondary/focus section on Summary File 1. The main Census 2000 Data Access and Use page is located at http://proximityone.com/cen2000.htm

Census Bureau CD-ROM Summary File 1 DBF Structure. Summary File dBASE file structural data/layouts are now available in two zip files. These files do not contain data. These files describe/document the manner in which the SF1 data will be released by the Census Bureau on CD-ROM in DBF structure.

The file structures provided here will be useful to 1) persons who need to understand the table layout and structure that will be used in accessing these data when they become available and 2) persons who need to develop software or have related needs.

Download the file SF1DBF.ZIP to view the structure of the 39 dbase files and corresponding geographic segment dbase file. To manage use/viewing of these files, you should consider placing the zip file and the zip expanded files in a new folder, such as c:\sf1.

Download the file SF1TAB.ZIP to view the table outlines (with table layout stubs) for all of Summary File 1. SF1TAB.ZIP expands to one dBASE file, TABLES.DBF. Consider placing the zip file and zip expanded file in the same folder as mentioned above.

Users of these data in a typical "table display application" will see demographic data that are contained in the 39 SF1 dBASE files displayed with the corresponding stubs found in the TABLES.DBF. The TABLES.DBF file and the SF1 39 "segment" files are linked via common subject matter fieldnames (the dBASE item "FIELDNUM") and the dBASE item "SEG".

For those less familiar with with the census-related concept of a table, the following selected records from the file TABLE.DBF describe the table layout/structure of Summary File 1 Table P013.

P013 P13. MEDIAN AGE BY SEX [3]
P013 Median age--
P013 P013001 Both sexes
P013 P013002 Male
P013 P013003 Female

The DBF file structures are also available via the Census Web server: http://www2.census.gov/census_2000/datasets/Summary_File_1/0File_Structure/.

Summary File 1 ASCII File Access via Census Web Server. The Summary File 1 data are now available on a state-by-state flow basis in ASCII structure via the Census Web server. Download files via this URL: http://www2.census.gov/census_2000/datasets/Summary_File_1/.

Convert Summary File 1 ASCII to DBF. Using the Proximity ASC2DBF software Version 2, you can convert the Summary File 1 (SF1) ASCII data, downloaded free from the Census Web server, to dBASE structure on your computer. Options include:

  1. select entire SF1 segments (corresponding to 39 data segments),
  2. select only individual data fields or tables that you need,
  3. select (using a button option) the "demographic profiles" data items, or
  4. convert the entire SF1 data for a state.

Option 2 enables you to quickly get just the data that you need for analyses.

Option 3 enables you to access the most widely used set of SF1 data that correspond to the same set of data released by the Census Bureau as Demographic Profiles.

Integrate Summary File 1 Data into Your Map Files. Using the Proximity Cen2Shp software, you will be able to automatically integrate ASC2DBF SF1 dBASE files into shape file dbf's. Easy as 1-2-3 ...

  1. ASC2DBF conversion to SF1 dBASE file
  2. download free map files in shape file format
  3. Use Cen2Shp to integrate the data in the SF1 dBASE file into the corresponding map shape file dbf (details explained in Cen2Shp documentation).
