How to Order dBMerge Main Page dBMerge Tour |
dBMerge: integrating geographic and subject matter data -- integrating data from Census Bureau Web servers for use on your computer dBMerge is a data integration program that allows you to merge data from multisourced files to new, merged data output databases.
Make a ZIP code (or most any type of geography) thematic map using demographic data
similar to the one shown at the right for your area by accessing map and data files
from the Census Bureau Web server. The downloaded files are then processed with dBMerge
enabling you to prepare maps with various mapping programs.
Census Bureau Web Servers. The American FactFinder (http://factfinder.census.gov is the Census Bureau's primary Webserver resource to provide public access to data from Census 2000 and many other statistical programs. While this is a tremendously powerful and useful resource, Web servers are inherently limited due to their inability to 1) integrate data and 2) provide sufficient breadth in analytical capacity. Other reasons for not preferring to use a publicly accessible Web server for analysis is the confidentiality requirements of your own data and scope of analyses. The Census Bureau Geography Division provides access to the TIGER/Line files and important derived map files in shapefile format via Web server. Unlike FactFinder, these server operations are designed specifically for downloading files to be used on other computers. This Web page focuses on use of the Census Bureau shapefiles that may be downloaded via http://www.census.gov/geo/www/cob/bdy_files.html. Similar shapefiles, with different geographic scope and granularity, are also available from Proximity via http://proximityone.com/maps2000.htm and many other sources. Below, steps are reviewed to proceed from data acquired from American FactFinder and the Cartographic Boundary Files server through the process of generating the map shown at the top of this page. These steps illustrate the immediate benefits of dBMerge to anyone that needs to use mapping and demographic data.
