Age-Race-Sex Detail Profile
Proximity demographic estimates and projections provide comprehensive and up-to-date annual demographic data for wide-ranging analysis and decisionmaking. Proximity updates include annual July 1 estimates for the years 2000 through 2006 with projections to 2020. Developed using an integrated modeling process, the estimates and projections are prepared for the U.S., current definition metropolitan areas, counties, cities/places, county subdivisions, ZIP codes, census tracts, and school districts.

Subject Matter Overview. For each type of geographic area, population estimates and projections are provided for these subject matter categories:

  • General Demographics
  • Social Characteristics
  • Economic Characteristics
  • Housing Characteristics

Not all items are available for all types of geography.

Estimates and Projections Geography. In addition to U.S. summary and states, estimates and projections are produced for the following types of geography (click on link to view definition).

  • U.S., States, D.C.
  • Metropolitan Areas
  • Counties and County Equivalent Areas
  • School Districts
  • ZIP Code Areas
  • Census Tracts
  • Incorporated Places/Cities
  • Minor Civil Divisions

Methodology. The methodology makes use of an integrated geographic area estimation and projection modeling system. Resulting estimates and projections are consistent across all types of geography.

Individual housing unit; bottom up aggregation. Data by individual housing unit/address are associated with corresponding census block. Summary statistics are tabulated for 8.2 million blocks that are then rolled-up and aggregated to higher level geography.

Dynamics of local/regional economy. The impact of establishment (businesses, government facilities, etc.) expansion and contraction are modeled in the regional economy enabling improved measures of migration.

Age-cohort progression. In a parallel operation, the 'demographic core' items (age, race/ethnicity, gender) are estimated/projected using a age-cohort progression method and associated time series models.

Controls to official estimates. The historical data are consistent, down to the individual age cell, with the official Census Bureau post-Census 2000 estimates. This fact not only assures users that they are using data that will agree with published official data, but also that the best means of producing the historical data reflected both in the historical data and the projections.

The historical data series have also been reviewed by state participants in the Census Bureau Federal State Cooperative Program for Population Estimates. Unlike estimates produced by other independent means, the historical series benefit from the scrutiny and local knowledge available from specialists in their respective states.

More detail on the methodology is available upon request (use form also located on this Web page).
