CommunityViewer GIS Updates

School District Demographic Comparative Analysis Feature Updated

Registered users may install the updated version now.  Use previously provided installation instructions.

The Demographic Comparative Analysis - School Districts (CV optional feature) is used to view/analyze demographic profiles for selected school districts.  The updated version provides new abilities to export the profiles for use with Word, Excel and other software.

See the CV User Guide section on this topic  for more information.

An important feature of the update is the ability to generate both rich text file (RTF) and Excel file.  The RTF format makes it easy to integrate portions of the tables directly into your reports.  The Excel format makes it easy to apply a macro or similar repeated operation to the same, invariant file structure (from district to district).

Applications Gallery Updates

The Applications Gallery http://proximityone.com/gallery/guide illustrates wide-ranging applications and projects developed using CommunityViewer and related geodemographic-economic resources.   New and updated items include:

Branch bank market analysis -- San Diego, CA
Disability analysis: school district & census tract -- Long Island, NY
School District GeoDemographic Information System (more about SDGIS): Averill Park CSD, NY ... Oneida CSD, NY
Metro by county demographic patterns -- Kansas City MSA
Diversity patterns using latest population estimates -- Houston, TX
Geocoding/viewing top businesses in context of Federal landmarks and buildings -- Washington, DC
India's 42 Megacities (2009 population of 1,000,000 or more)

Census 2010/ACS

Census Day is April 1, 2010, and marks the reference date for Census 2010 data.   The Census Bureau American Community Survey (ACS) is now integrally linked with Census 2010.  The "Census 2010/ACS" DMINews section provides monthly highlights of current and pending developments regarding these programs.  The focus is on data access and use and to a lesser extent data development and related operations. Proximity will continue to maintain the decennial census focused Web pages Census 2000 and Census 2010.

Gen-X Population Impact on Age Cohort Trends: U.S. by County

The Generation X (baby bust) population were born between 1965 and 1976 as the U.S. birth rate dramatically decreased. This population group is now aged 33-to-44.  Throughout the U.S. most areas have experienced a dramatic decrease in the size of this age cohort in 2008 compared to 2000.

The following map view shows the population percent change from 2000 to 2008 for the population ages 30-to-44 in the U.S. by county.  The 30-to-44 5-year age cohort groups are based on the latest July 1, 2008 Census Bureau 5-year age cohort estimates.  Many counties with blue pattern (experiencing an increase in this cohort) are because of special circumstances that have caused the county population ages 30-44 to grow (net in-migration for these age cohorts or for earlier age cohorts at an earlier time).

This map was prepared with the Proximity CommunityViewer (CV) software using the same dataset used to develop the diversity analyses reviewed elsewhere in this section.  The underlying dataset enables analysis of any single age cohort or grouped set of cohorts like that shown here.  See the dataset subject matter description.  Use CV to examine your region of interest, your cohort groupings of interest ... and integrate your data.

Disability Pattern Analysis: School Districts, Counties & Census Tracts

Based on the Census Bureau 2007 American Community Survey, 41.2 million (15-percent) of the U.S. civilian noninstitutionalized population 5 years and older have some level of disability.  These and related data are summarized in the Census Bureau American with Disabilities Act (ADA) Fact Sheet commemorating the upcoming July 26 ADA anniversary date. Many Census Bureau statistical resources are summarized here.  Other Web-based Federal statistical data resources are summarized here.  This brief illustrates how some of these data can be used to gain insights into patterns of population with disabilities.

See application examples showing patterns of children with disabilities using GIS tools to prepare thematic maps of the U.S. by school district.  Use data and methods summarized here to develop similar applications for areas of interest to you.  The Guide provides some information on how to do this.  See these state and metro by school district examples: Colorado and metro by school district examples: Atlanta, Kansas City, Houston and New York (Long Island). Contact Proximity for more information about using these resources and methods.

County/Regional Diversity Analysis Using New Demographic Estimates

Examine patterns of diversity using new annual estimates of county level population by age, gender, race, and Hispanic origin prepared by the Census Bureau.  Updated annually in May, these annual estimates extend from 2000 to 2008.  The estimates provide the 5-year age cohort by race/ethnicity by gender detail corresponding to the latest official county total population estimates released in March.  These updates are integrated into Proximity Situation & Outlook, MetroDynamics, and other tools.

Ranking Table. Use the County Diversity Ranking Table to view characteristics of counties of interest.  The following graphic illustrates selecting all Texas counties and sorting the counties in descending order based on the total 2008 population.  Click on this ranking table link to interactively view the percent change characteristics (do not appear in this graphic as they extend to the right).

Demographic Profiles Show Extended Diversity Characteristics.  The underlying dataset used to extract the selected items shown in the ranking table is described in the dataset subject matter description.  This is the same dataset used to develop the Gen-X age cohort analyses   reviewed elsewhere in this section.  These datasets are used with Proximity software to display/export much more detailed diversity attributes and aggregate these data in multi-county regional summaries.  See sample profiles:

Examining County/Regional Age Cohort Trends Using New Demographic Estimates

As described elsewhere in this section, between 2000 and 2008, many counties have experienced as much as 20-30% decrease in the 30-34, 35-39 and 40-44 age cohorts.  Examples of how this change manifests itself are shown in tabular/spreadsheet format profiles presented below.  How do these changes manifest themselves in the workforce? How is the economy being affected? What will be the pattern in 2015? The following samples are Excel file links.
