America's Largest Schools:  2008-09 School Year

America's largest schools (schools with enrollment of 3,000 or more) had a cumulative enrollment of just over 1,000,000 students in the 2008-09 school year. Use the interactive ranking table to rank and view characteristics of these 283 schools.  See http://proximityone.com/largestschools.htm.   The data are reported by individual school districts and state education agencies. This marks the first time that national scope school level data have been reported within just a few months of the close of the school year. In the past, data for all schools have not been available until more than a year following the close of the school year.

Proximity has geocoded all 103,000 national scope K-12 schools and created a shapefile for GIS applications. The map presented below shows locations of all schools (gray markers) and schools with 3,000 enrollment or more (red markers).  The Proximity CommunityViewer GIS software was used to geocode the school address data, create the schools shapefile and create the map.  Knit together this school shapefile with other geography relevant to your needs.

Contact Proximity for more information.  Mention 2008-09 K-12 schools in the text section.

Using the New 2009 Vintage TIGER/Line Shapefiles

New 2009 vintage TIGER/Line Shapefiles (TLS) were released by the Census Bureau in October.  The shapefiles reflect legal boundaries for governmental units as of January 2009.  See example of examining boundary change (2008 to 2009) for incorporated cities using these files.  See more information about TLS at http://proximityone.com/tigerline.htm.

Participate in a Webinar on accessing and using the new TLS.  See more information at http://proximityone.com/webmeetings.htm.

County & Metro Employment and Unemployment

New August 2009 estimates ... use County Monthly Employment and Unemployment Trends tools and resources (see http://proximityone.com/county_employment.htm), updated monthly, to learn about employment and unemployment trends in your counties of interest. What trends will change when and where? How will this impact you?

Each month Proximity develops an extract file from the MetroDynamics (MD) database focused on county employment and unemployment trends. The extract file includes monthly projections based on the county-level employment and unemployment data published monthly by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS).  Projections are developed by Proximity using the MD Modeler, related data and multi-scenario assumptions. The MD extract data are integrated into a shapefile for visual analysis. The shapefile is added to a CommunityViewer GIS project to develop many different types of employment-unemployment geospatial analyses and maps. Unlike PDF and webserver maps, you can integrate your data with these tools to examine prospective future impact on your projects, programs and operations.

As an example, the U.S. by county August 2009 data are released by BLS on October 1, 2009 (see Integrated Federal Statistical Data Access Calendar for this and upcoming monthly access dates) are integrated into MD the same week, estimates and projections are updated, and the shapefile is developed.

To obtain the most recent version of the shapefile or Excel file with historical monthly estimates and projections contact Proximity using this form (mention county employment-unemployment monthly trends) or call (888) 364-7656.

MetroDynamics Quarterly Establishments-Employment-Earnings Updates

MetroDynamics (MD) is updated with the detailed (subject matter data by maximum detailed NAICS category) 2009Q1 quarterly establishments, employment, and earnings (EEE) data based on employer reported data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics ES-202 program.   See description of subject matter included in MD.  MD provides quarterly time series EEE data from 2004Q1 forward, then making a 21 quarter series.  Use the optional MD feature to estimate suppressed data and use continuous quarterly measurements in your analyses.

High Level Industry Quarterly Economic Analysis Updates

HLIAnalyst integrated software and database enables uses to analyze county level quarterly economic high level industry trend data.  The quarterly updated database enables users to examine employer reported "ES-202" data on establishments, employment and earnings with only a 7-8 month lag from the reporting period.  Easy access to county (or custom aggregate) area economic trend data.  Supported with on-demand graphic analysis/charts and analytical operations such as location quotient analysis.

Analyzing New Metro GDP Estimates

The U.S. Bureau of Economic Analysis (BEA) released annually updated estimates of Gross Domestic Product (GDP) by metropolitan statistical area in September 2009.  GDP estimates/forecasts provide comprehensive measures of economic output for an area and enable analysis of contribution and change by type of industry.

GDP current estimates and projections are developed/updated quarterly for the U.S., states and metros as a part of the ProximityOne Situation & Outlook Estimates & Projections (S&O) program.

111th Congressional District Demographic Ranking Tables -- 2007 & 2008 Demographics

New York Congressional District 16 had the lowest 2008 median household income ($22,912) among all 111th Congressional Districts while Virginia Congressional District 11 had the highest 2008 median household income ($107,393).  See map view of New York CD 16.  Which districts have highest/lowest percent high school graduates?  Where do your Congressional Districts of interest rank based on these and other demographic measures?

Use the interactive ranking table at http://proximityone.com/cd.htm to examine selected 2008 demographics for the 111th Congressional Districts based on data derived from the 2008 American Community Survey and population change between 2007 and 2008.  See the ranking table with corresponding data for 2007 demographics at http://proximityone.com/cd111_07rt.htm.

See links at http://proximityone.com/cd.htm to access Congressional District demographic profiles in dBase structure suitable for integration into shapefiles and/or direct use with Excel and other software that can process dBase files.
