Assessing Education Workforce Industry Infrastructure

What is the economic impact of the 'Education Services industry sector' in your county or metropolitan area? As important as education is, the answers to this question are often not well understood by stakeholders. Using the most up-to-date national scope data available in the Proximity Establishment and Workforce Database, we provide workforce and industry infrastructure analyses for economic/activity sectors defined to meet client requirements. This web page provides an example of the types of insights that can be gained from these analyses focusing on the Education Services sector for Harris County (Houston), Texas.

The economic impact of the Education Services sector in Harris County in 2002 was $5.3 billion as measured by wages generated by jobs in this sector. We can help you similarly assign a specific measure of the impact of your economic/activity area tailored to your geographic area(s) of interest -- and help you better see the relative position of your business, market, or sphere of activity in this context.

We are able to analyze very current data and in the form of trends. In the example reviewed here, quarterly data are analyzed for 2002. Equally important, the data are summarized by detailed type of business/activity. The industry breakout is organized by NAICS codes (successor to the SIC classifications). This classification enables analysis of the number of establishments, employment and wages by type of business by quarterly time period not available from any other source of data.

The following spreadsheet graphic shows characteristics of the Harris County Education Services sector establishments, employment and wages for 2002 -- annually and by quarter.

Analyses include demographic data from the COARS age-race-sex and Demographic Estimates and Projections databases. These multisourced data are integrated for analysis using the Proximity DMIS software which is optionally available to clients for more in-depth analysis.

Proximity Establishment and Workforce Database. The Proximity Establishment and Workforce Database includes establishment, employment, and wage data. These data are summarized at the state, county, 2003 vintage metro levels. The time series data are summarized for monthly, quarterly, and annual time periods. The data are categorized by NAICS codes (with up to 6-digit industry classification detail) and by type of ownership (e.g., government, private).

The provisional 2002 county and metro data were added to the database in October 2003. There is generally a 9 month lag between the reporting date of the data and when it is integrated into the Proximity Establishment and Workforce Database.

About the Educational Services Sector. The Educational Services sector is one primary business/industry classification in the North American Industry Classification System (NAICS), a coding system used to standardized how data on business activity is organized. See this list of the codes and types of business activities included in NAICS broad category 61 (Educational Services).

Included in the types of business list for educational services (4-digit levels) are:

  • School districts ('Elementary and secondary schools')
  • Junior colleges
  • Colleges and universities
  • Business, computer and management training
  • Technical and trade schools
  • Other schools and instruction

The integration of these data across types of educational services is part of what can make these analyses compelling and provide specialized ways of comparing the scope of different types of educational services in one geographic area. Organizations may think of themselves as "secondary education" or "higher education" and might not even think in terms of relationships between related educational services even though they are highly connected.
