MetroDynamics Big Box Stores & Demographic Patterns |
Custom Quarterly Establishments, Employment & Earning Estimates Do you need to analyze characteristics of specific types of business activity by county, metro or custom defined areas? Use Proximity custom estimates services to develop quarterly updates for types of business and geography of interest to you. Use these data to gauge how different areas of interest are changing. For example, an economic development organization may want to compare or contrast magnitude and change in the "biotech" industry for their county or metro to a set of other county(s) or metro(s). Each quarter Proximity uses employer reported data at the county level to update MetroDynamics. These quarterly data provide a unique and best overall indicator of how the economy is changing at the county and county-grouping levels. With only a 10-month lag from the reference date of the data to the availability of the data for analysis makes these data most up-to-date of any economic time series. The quarterly time period enables you to examine short- and long-term change. Data on the number of establishments, employment, and earnings by detailed NAICS type of business code provide the opportunity for detailed industry analysis. Each quarterly Establishment-Employment-Earnings (E3) dataset includes approximately 3 million records for the U.S. by county. A data record is included for each county for each of the NAICS industry codes where there is one or more establishment. While the number of establishments data are reported, the data for employment is often suppressed to maintain confidentiality. For example, if these is only one establish employing 2,800 people, the number of employees data would be suppressed. Proximity develops estimates for the suppressed data fields. The estimates are developed using an algorithm that factors in the data that are reported for the county for the totals, other industries in the county, and other factors. The result is that we develop a set of records for which data can be aggregated across types of business (NAICS codes) and across counties. Biotechnology -- An Example Biotechnology may be defined using the following industry codes. -- NAICS 541710 Research and Development in the Physical, Engineering, and Life Sciences -- NAICS 3254 Pharmaceutical and Medicine Manufacturing Broader definitions of biotechnology can include these types of business codes: -- NAICS 3391 Medical Equipment and Supplies Manufacturing -- NAICS 3345 Electrical Instruments Manufacturing -- NAICS 6215 Medical and Diagnostic Labs Businesses, analysts, associations and economic development organizations may want to define differently focused biotechology industries. Consider a need to have biotechnology industry data for three counties in the Dallas, TX metro (Dallas, Denton and Tarrant) and three counties in the Miami-Dade, FL metro (Broward, Miami-Dade, and Palm Beach). The following spreadsheet shows data for these industries for each county for the 2nd quarter of 2006. All cells showing NA are data suppressed in the original data. Inavailability of these data precludes size analysis in individual counties as well as aggregation across county areas. Custom estimates provided by Proximity replace the NA cell values with estimated data and enable county level analysis as well as aggregation across counties. Contact Proximity for more information. Please mention "custom E3 estimates" in the text section.
