School District Language Spoken at Home
This document shows an example of the use of these data. Use the ranking table presented below to examine language spoken at home by school district. These 1,400 districts (for which language spoken at home is tabulated) represent more than 50-percent of the U.S. school age population ages 5 to 17. The language spoken at home table/items are a part of several hundred subject matter items in the ACS 05-07 data. Language spoken at home where "English is not spoken very well" can be an important challenge to educational opportunities and achievement. Relatively high percentages are indicators for increased attention and resources to improve educational opportunities and improved success. While most states and districts conduct in-school tests to gain insights on language challenges, these tests are not uniform from state to state, differ in terms of interpretation and utility, reflect only characteristics of enrolled students, and thus do not cover the "school district community."
